What Do You Need to Know about Remote Proctoring

During the pandemic, the transition to remote learning has become inevitable all over the world. As a result, students' knowledge has to be assessed using an online test format that gives learners many opportunities to cheat. However, online proctoring technologies can help to overcome these obstacles.

Remote proctoring is a monitoring technology that automatically detects any prohibited activity during the exam. The whole process is controlled using three sources: audio, video, and desktop screen recording. In case of attempts to open another tab or window (except the one with the exam) or look at the cheat-sheet / listen to a prompt, the system automatically marks the violation and sends the information to the examiner. Generally, the proctoring process is monitored by a proctor, a specially trained person who notes any minor violations and supervises the monitoring system's correct operation.

Generally, high-tech proctoring systems have several key advantages that allow high-quality inspection at an optimal cost.

No need to buy a server or install additional software

There are two ways to store online proctoring software: cloud platforms or customer’s infrastructure. The Examus users have a choice: to store the information either on a dedicated server, or on our cloud, or a client's virtual storage. We always inform our clients that the deployment of the solution in every case can take some time. For example, the cloud installation requires about three weeks to complete. After that, we run the integration and quality assurance, which takes another week.

For the learners' convenience, we have also set up online proctoring with no download. To pass the test, students don't have to install any online exam software on their computers. The process for student is easy: they open the browser, sign in in the account, and open the test. Before the exam students should check the computer for compliance with technical requirements by having a demo-test.

The presence of an AI proctor

With every year, more and more AI technologies are entering our life. Online proctoring is not an exception. AI proctoring is a monitoring system that can track any cheating attempts during the exam using AI technologies.

Using computer vision and some other features, it can track:
- Presence/Absence of a student or other people on the screen;
- The level of involvement of examinees;
- Any unknown voices in the room;
- Switching between tabs and windows on the user's desktop.

Since AI algorithms are still developing, we always recommend using it together with the proctor who can supervise the accuracy of AI performance and mark some other less noticeable violations.

The ability to conduct online oral exams

Online written exams and tests are already successfully regulated by to online proctoring technologies. However, the same efficiency of monitoring systems during oral exams has not yet been available. We have worked hard to solve this task and have recently introduced a new product Examus Verbal.

It allows conducting oral exams in a single-window mode. The whole process is recorded and analyzed by an AI proctor and an independent supervisor to provide maximum transparency. At the beginning of the exam, students connect to the system, get their questions, and then have time to prepare the answers. When the time is expired or when the examinee is ready, they are invited to a separate virtual room with the board of examiners. In comparison with regular exams in the classroom, Examus Verbal makes it possible to monitor how each student is preparing to answer, record a video of the entire exam and assess students' knowledge remotely from anywhere in the world.
